A telephone scam has recently been identified by the U.S. Department of Homeland
Security (DHS) that allows unauthorized individuals to
have complete access to your telephone line. With complete access,
these individuals can place long distance calls that are
subsequently billed to your phone number.
According to the
DHS, the scam works like this:
- You receive a call from an individual who identifies himself
as a telephone company service technician.
- He tells you that he's conducting a test on telephone lines.
- In order to complete the test, he asks you to dial 9, then 0,
and finally the pound sign (#). When you're done, you simply hang
up.
By dialing 9-0-#, you're giving that individual full
access to your phone line.
For your protection, do not dial
9-0-# for anyone. If you believe that you may have been a victim of
this scam, please contact your local law enforcement department and
your telephone service provider immediately.
